Becoming a parent is one of life’s most joyful moments, full of hopes and dreams. For Carlos and Erica Morales from Phoenix, Arizona, that joy was tragically mixed with heartbreak.
The couple met in 2006 and, despite a language barrier, fell in love. They married in 2007 and began trying for a family. After a miscarriage, fertility treatments helped Erica conceive again—this time with quadruplets.
On January 12, 2015, Erica was rushed to the hospital due to high blood pressure. The babies—three girls and one boy—were delivered by C-section. But soon after, Erica went into hypovolemic shock and passed away, leaving Carlos devastated.
“I went from the best day of my life to the worst,” he said.
Carlos named one of the babies Erica, in honor of his wife. With help from Erica’s mother, he learned to care for his children and stepped fully into his role as a single father.
Though his loss was immense, Carlos found strength in his children and the support of others. His story is one of deep sorrow, resilience, and the power of love.
